Magpie, this I bequeath

Sometimes I like to think of myself as a person and not a cat. "And in that moment, I swear we were cat-finite."

Mariah Carey | The Roof (Back in Time)(Feat. Mobb Deep & Big Noyd)  (1998)

1997 was the year Mariah Carey broke free and began to take charge of her music and image. Her music transitioned into a more R&B/Hip-Hop influence as she finally had full control of the production.

"The Roof" was released as the third single from Carey’s sixth album, Butterfly. It samples Mobb Deep’s “Shook Ones”. Unfortunately, with the conflict of her record company and divorce of the CEO (Tommy Mottola) at the time they made it difficult for her to release R&B inspired tracks. It was given commercial release in Europe while “Breakdown" was released in another country.

It’s such a shame because R&B is where Mariah really shines. Nevertheless, enjoy an underrated song & video!

My favorite Stephen Gammell illustrations from ‘Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark’.

Stephen Gammell was probably my biggest inspiration growing up, one of them anyway.
